Sugar Gliders: Social, Nocturnal and Demanding
Intensely Social
Wild sugar gliders live in family colonies, and a glider kept alone can become stressed and lonely. Keep at least two compatible gliders. The MSD Veterinary Manual also recommends at least two hours of social time with you every evening or night.
Space: Tall and Busy
PetMD suggests at least 24 × 24 × 48 inches (60 × 60 × 120 cm) for a pair, taller than wide, with bars no more than about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) apart, branches, shelves and sleeping pouches. Gliders also need safe time out of the cage in a glider-proofed room.
A Specialist Diet
Sugar gliders need a carefully balanced diet, and veterinary sources differ on the exact recipe. The MSD Veterinary Manual describes a base of a nectar mixture, a commercial glider pellet and calcium-dusted insects, with only a small share of fruit and vegetables. Poorly balanced diets, especially low in calcium, are a common cause of serious problems. Work out the diet with a vet who treats sugar gliders before you buy.
A Long Commitment
They live about 9–12 years according to the MSD Veterinary Manual, and some sources give up to 14. They're nocturnal, can be noisy at night, and mark their territory by scent.
The Law
Rules differ by country and state. California bans pet sugar gliders (California Department of Fish and Wildlife), and some other US states and cities restrict them. In Australia, where they're native wildlife, rules vary by state and territory. In the UK they can be kept, but the Animal Welfare Act duty of care applies. Check with your national or state authority before you buy.
If You're Still Serious
Talk to a vet who treats sugar gliders first, adopt a bonded pair from a rescue if you can, and set up the cage, diet and night-time routine before they come home.
